In 2013, The Washington Post, a leading national news organization and digital media company, engaged JM Zell to assist in realigning its real estate strategy with its business goals. JM Zell worked through The Washington Post’s ownership transition to arrange a sale of its previous headquarters to Carr Properties and lease / build out state-of-the-art space at 1301 K Street.

JM Zell worked with corporate leadership and individual business units to translate its operational needs into a cohesive disposition and leasing strategy. JM Zell’s integrated transaction and project management teams enabled the client to interface with a single team in meeting its project goals from disposition to leasing, build-out, and move-in.

In Winter of 2024, JM Zell restructured and renegotiated the 300,000 SF lease, on behalf of The Washington Post, which resulted in tens of millions of dollars in savings. The restructuring also netted The Washington Post a significant tenant improvement allowance which is being used to update the internal environment and help buttress The Post as it transforms its operations and embraces its digital media strategy. These significant changes allow The Washington Post to evolve and operate in its space through at least 2037.
